Arthritis can either be caused by chronic inflammation or wear and tear. Arthritis ultimately results in loss of cartilage and when worn away bone on bone contact results in severe pain, stiffness and decreased function. When conservative treatment is not effective anymore the best option is a joint replacement. In principle there are two different options: hip resurfacing and total hip replacement. However, it is not without problems and should be considered in younger more active patients generally less than 60m years old. Total hip replacement replaces the femoral head and neck and places a metal cup with a plastic liner in the acetabulum. This operation withstood the test of time and is a very successful procedure.
