Avascular necrosis (AVN) is a condition where the blood supply to the femoral head is compromised. This causes parts of the bone to die. Common causes of AVN are trauma (fractures and dislocations), chronic medical conditions (for example diabetes), rare conditions such as sickle cell disease, autoimmune conditions and prolonged use of cortisone medication. Excessive alcohol and tobacco consumption have also been implicated with AVN. AVN progresses with time and may not cause any pain in the early stages. If caught early reduction of weight-bearing or medication may be helpful. Surgery includes decompression of bone, bone grafting to replace dead bone, osteotomies (changing the alignment to relieve stress on the bone and joint)and finally joint replacement.
