shallow socket The shoulder joint is a ball and socket joint and is the most mobile joint in the human body.  Due to the large humeral head embedded into a much smaller and shallow socket, a loose joint capsule and movement of the shoulder blade on the chest it allows multiaxial movement allowing us to place the hand almost anywhere in space. The shoulder joint is thus inherently unstable and requires both ligamentous and muscular support.  Joint stability is provided by the three rotator cuff muscles, the glenohumeral ligaments and the glenoid labrum.
