The hip joint is reinforced by ligaments; three outside the capsule and one connecting the ball to the socket (ligamentum teres). They stabilize the joint, strengthen the capsule and prevent excessive movement. The ligamentum teres is not vitally important but contains a small artery that supplies the head with blood. In young children with hip dislocation it can either stretch or tear the ligaments.
